Characterization of Red Seaweed Extracts Treated by Water, Acid and Alkaline Solutions

Abstract: Seaweed contained health functional polysaccharides and polyphenols. Five extracts were prepared from red seaweed Melanothamnus somalensis; two of these were aqueous at 20°C (F1) and 70°C (F2), followed by acid (F3), alkali (F4) and acid-washed (F5) treatments. Molecular characteristics of extracts were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. Health functionality was determined by sulfate and polyphenol contents, and thermal characteristics were determ… Show more

“…Agar, extracted from red seaweeds with a molecular weight range of 100-30,000 kDa [78], has been studied for its various polysaccharide fractions. Among these fractions, the 3.2 kDa fraction isolated from the red seaweed Pyropia yezoensis was found to be effective in stress protection [79].…”

“…Compilations on agar yield (10–43.4%) can be found in [37]. Cold extraction with distilled water at room temperature was reported for Gracilaria birdiae [61], but agar extracts prepared at 20 °C showed a wider size distribution (1–30,000 kDa) [62]. For the chemical liquefaction of agarose, acid prehydrolysis has been commonly employed [63,64,65].…”
