Characterization of Spinel‐Type Cobalt and Nickel Oxide Thin Films by X‐Ray Near Grazing Diffraction, Transmission and Reflectance Spectroscopies, and Cyclic Voltammetry

Abstract: The application of three analytical techniques, x-ray near grazing diffraction, infrared transmission and reflectance spectroscopy, and UV-visible-near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, to the characterization of cobalt cobaltite, Co304, and of nickel cobaltite, NiCozO4 films, is reported. Thin films of CosO4 and NiCo204, in a 10-1000 nm thickness range were prepared by two methods: spraying and sputtering. Characteristic spectra and thickness limits are discussed based on theoretical considerations. Correspo… Show more

“…To study the hybridized Zn–Co 3 O 4 and Zn–air reactions of the Co 3 O 4 /carbon cloth electrode, the cyclic voltammetric (CV) test was then carried out in 6 m KOH. As shown in Figure S6 in the Supporting Information, in addition to the conventional cathodic ORR and anodic OER current at the potentials of <1.0 or >2.1 V, respectively, the CV curve recorded in ambient air includes three pairs of redox peaks in the range of 1.7 and 2.1 V. The first pair (I a /I c ) corresponds to the electrochemical transition involving Co(OH) 2 /Co 3 O 4 , while the second (II a /II c ) and the third pair (III a /III c ) can be attributed to the conversion of Co 3 O 4 /CoOOH and CoOOH/CoO 2 species, respectively . These phenomena are different from the reported active materials of NiO/Ni(OH) 2 and NiCo 2 O 4 , in which only one redox couple (i.e., Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ ) is presented .…”

“…The rapid kinetics of the redox reactions involving cobalt (Equations and ) generates a higher working voltage, while the oxygen reactions (Equation ) result in a high capacity. Consequently, a hybrid Zn battery with a liquid alkaline electrolyte perfectly integrated the advantages of a Zn–air battery and a Zn–Co 3 O 4 battery and delivered a high voltage of 1.85 V and a high capacity of 792 mAh g Zn −1 .…”

“…Low spectral reflectance indicates high absorptance and vice versa. To the best of our knowledge, only a few previous studies on the optical properties of cobalt-based metal oxides (M x Co y O z with M = Mn, Cu, Ni) thin film coatings have been carried out [1,22,40,41].…”
