Characterization of Tantalum Carbide Reinforced Copper Composite Developed Using Mechanical Alloying

Abstract: The effects of the consolidation pressure on the properties of novel Cu-15vol% TaC composite was investigated. The copper-based composite has been prepared using a high energy planetary mill via in-situ route. A mixture of copper, tantalum and graphite powder was mechanically alloyed for milling time of 8 hours at speed of 400 rpm. The as-milled powder was consolidated by cold pressing under various pressure (i.e. 100, 200, 300 and 400 MPa) at room temperature and sintered in argon atmosphere at 900 °C for an … Show more

“…Aside from the various synthesis methods, proper reinforcement plays a critical role in fabricating the composite with desired properties. The effect of different reinforcement elements such as Al2O3 [7], TiO2, ZrO2 [15], and TaC [16] on the MMCs, especially copper-based ones, have been studied widely. Investigating the additional amount of B4C revealed improvements in both wear resistance and hardness [17].…”

“…as carbides' alloys [5][6][7] . Tantalum carbides are also used to strengthen copper-based alloys 8 , alloyed steels 9,10 , titanium-based 11 and molybdenum-based 12 alloys. Besides coating techniques and sintering route, TaC carbides can precipitate during solidification, and are in equiaxed alloys and even in directionally solidified alloys 13 .…”
