“…8, a small percentage of both CD4+ and CD8+ cells were producing IFN-γ before treatment was initiated, both in the IC and the CH groups. At the end of treatment, however, cytometric analysis of stimulated Montenegro's skin test were positive in 88% of the cases, supporting previous observations from our group as well as from other studies (Carvalho et al 1995, da Costa et al 1996, thus confirming the validity of this test as a helpful diagnostic tool in leishmaniasis.…”

“…Our study focused primarily on the production of IFN-γ by these cells due to the involvement of this cytokine in resistance to and recovery from leishmanial infections (Carvalho et al 1995, Coutinho et al 1998, Ribeirode-Jesus et al 1998. When analyzing the production of this cytokine before treatment onset it was observed that cells from patients with chronic lesions produced more IFN-γ than those from patients with recent infections.…”

“…It is also expected that T cell responses and monocyte function are important in the control of L. braziliensis infection. In fact, there is evidence of a Th1 type of response in subjects with subclinical L. braziliensis infection and in subjects with self-healing cutaneous leishmaniasis (37). The observation presented here that, early in the infection, T cell response is depressed in cutaneous leishmaniasis may indicate that, after infection, there is an absence of IFN-γ production that allows parasite multiplication.…”

“…No differences in lesion healing between men and women were found, despite the findings of Travi et al (2002), who studied hamsters infected with Leishmania (Viannia) and observed that the immune response was more permissive to infection among males than females. The factors that contribute to the cutaneous disease evolving into one of the later forms are not fully understood, but delay in healing the first lesion and inadequate treatment are both known predictors (Carvalho et al, 1995).…”
