Eight species of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes (Laurilia sulcata, Peniophora aurantiaca. Resinicium bicolol: Scytinostroma galactinum, Terana caerulea,Trichaptum abietinum, Z biforme and Z fuscoviolaceum) were used in a spore-trapping test to evaluate their individual ability for long-distance spore dispersal. Petri dishes with single spore mycelia were used as baits. In the experiment, carried out at the Botanical Institute in Goteborg, spores from the air were regularly captured. Surprisingly, spores were captured from species whose nearest known natural occurrence was located quite far from Goteborg. The closest population of Peniophora aurantiaca is about 1000 km south of Goteborg. The results from this experiment support the hypothesis that fungal spores are widely and efficiently dispersed. Such a broad and extensive dispersal ability is of vital importance, especially for wood-inhabiting species which are highly dependent on a substrate which is only temporarily available.

Dispersal of the old‐growth forest hngus Phlebia centrifuga was studied under natural conditions in an old‐growth forest stand in south Sweden using spore trapping with single spore mycelia as bait. Sampling was done not only in the forest but also 500 and 1000 m outside it. Within 100 m of the basidomata source, spore dispersal was very efficient, and it was estimated that 385 spores settled per m2 during 24 h. The minimum total number of spores calculated to have fallen within the 100 m circle was 1.21 × 707. The spore fall decreased significantly with distance from the basidiomata. Almost all of the mycelia were dikaryotised at lm distance, compared with less than half at 10 and 100 m. Dikaryotisation was observed in a small but significant number of mycelia at 500 and 1000 m. Mating success between different single spore mycelia differed significantly and we speculate that effective population size may be affected by mating choice in this species. What factors restrict this species to old‐growth forests? In the light of the dikaryotisation observed at 1000 m from the source, it seems unlikely that this fungus is restricted by spore dispersal distance, which implies good prospects for its successful establishment in restored habitats, i.e. first‐generation forests with much coarse woody debris.

The significance of sexual selection, the component of natural selection associated with variation in mating success, is well established for the evolution of animals and plants, but not for the evolution of fungi. Even though fungi do not have separate sexes, most filamentous fungi mate in a hermaphroditic fashion, with distinct sex roles, that is, investment in large gametes (female role) and fertilization by other small gametes (male role). Fungi compete to fertilize, analogous to 'male-male' competition, whereas they can be selective when being fertilized, analogous to female choice. Mating types, which determine genetic compatibility among fungal gametes, are important for sexual selection in two respects. First, genes at the mating-type loci regulate different aspects of mating and thus can be subject to sexual selection. Second, for sexual selection, not only the two sexes (or sex roles) but also the mating types can form the classes, the members of which compete for access to members of the other class. This is significant if mating-type gene products are costly, thus signalling genetic quality according to Zahavi's handicap principle. We propose that sexual selection explains various fungal characteristics such as the observed high redundancy of pheromones at the B mating-type locus of Agaricomycotina, the occurrence of multiple types of spores in Ascomycotina or the strong pheromone signalling in yeasts. Furthermore, we argue that fungi are good model systems to experimentally study fundamental aspects of sexual selection, due to their fast generation times and high diversity of life cycles and mating systems.
