This study aims to develop asbestos-free and environmentally friendly brake pads using apus bamboo powder (Gigantochloa apus). In the experiments, bamboo powder, resin, and catalyst were used as the raw materials and varied to ensure the quality of the prepared brake pads. To analyze the performance of brake pads, the fabricated brake pads are subjected to physicochemical tests (such as microscopic tests and functional group analysis) and mechanical tests (such as puncture tests, compression tests, and friction tests). The research results showed that adjusting the composition of the raw materials allowed a change in the performance of the brake pad, including porosity, morphological structure, and mechanical properties. Indeed, the condition of the low porosity on the inside of the brake pad strategically optimizes the compression strength of the material, making this design ideal for applications that require high resistance to compression loads. This study shows the possibility of apus bamboo powder as an alternative to asbestos in the production of non-asbestos brake pads, offering a safer and environmentally friendly solution as well as giving ideas for supporting current issues in the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This article is designed to examine the aptness of Ventilago maderaspatana fiber (VMF) as reinforcement in polymer composites. A significant quantity of cellulose fraction (56.12 ± 5.42 wt%) in the VMF was estimated via chemical analysis. The X-ray diffraction analysis identified the presence of cellulose type-I and peak cellulose type-IV in the VMF, and it quantified the crystallinity index (25.88%) and crystalline size (26.12 nm) of the VMF. Various chemical functional groups in the VMF were categorized with the help of Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopic analysis. The thermal degradation behavior of the VMF was investigated with the help of thermogravimetric analysis, and it determined the thermal stability (200 C) and kinetic activation energy (62.46 kJ/mol) of VMF. The scanning electron microscopic and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis revealed the existence of contaminations, hemicellulose and lignin on the outer layer of VMF, and it was confirmed by atomic force microscopic analysis. The lower density (1236 ± 18.42 kg/m 3 ) and better tensile strength (383.7 ± 16.07 MPa) of the VMF enabled the possibility of use as reinforcement in fiber reinforced plastics.

This research investigated the scope of using a fiber harvested from Mucuna atropurpurea (MAF) plant as reinforcement in fiber-reinforced plastics. An optical microscope and a pycnometer were used to calculate the diameter (289 ± 21 μm) and density (1082 ± 29 kg/m 3 ) of the MAF. Using chemical compositional analysis, 58.74 ± 5.74 wt% cellulose and 16.31 ± 3.21 wt% hemicellulose, and 14.22 ± 3.36 wt% lignin and 0.38 ± 0.08 wt% wax components were found in the MAF. Numerous chemical stretching in the MAF were checked using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Briodo analysis (68.08 kJ/mol) showed the kinetic activation energy of the MAF. Surface morphological inspections suggested surface treatments of MAF due to contaminations and wax on the fiber surface. The statistical analysis conducted for determining the tensile properties of MAF revealed that MAF is a suitable candidate to produce fiber-reinforced plastics. Characterization of MAF-reinforced polyester composites showed that 40 mm fiber length and 30 wt% fiber enhanced tensile strength (109.51 ± 2.1 MPa), flexural strength (156.62 ± 3.1 MPa), and hardness (94 ± 4 HRRW). Fractography images of composites with fiber pull-outs in the MAF-reinforced plastics were taken for analysis. Less cavities and voids in the 30 wt% MAF-reinforced composites were found along with reduced water absorption.
