“…It has been reported to cause serious diseases and mortalities in many aquaculture species, leading to huge economic losses worldwide. Marine species infected by this bacterium include penaeid shrimp, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, olive flounder, black rockfish, sea bream and turbot (Alvarez et al 1998;Zhang & Austin 2000;Austin & Zhang 2006;Won, Kim & Park 2006;Zhou et al 2012). The analysis and identification of V. harveyi are thus important topics in the study of the marine ecoenvironment.…”

“…The isolate was identified as V. harveyi , based on the scheme of Pedersen, Verdonck, Austin, Austin, Blanch, Grimont, Jofre, Koblavi, Larsen, Tiainen, Vigneulle and Swings (1998). However, the isolate did not produce the ornithine decarboxylase, unlike other V. harveyi strains (Austin & Austin 1999; Won et al 2006). We also analysed the 16S rDNA gene sequence of the isolate.…”

“…These species cause haemorrhagic septicaemia in marine fish and may lead to substantial mortalities in cultured populations (Wong & Leong 1990). Among the genus Vibrio , the species V. harveyi is the major causal agent of luminous vibriosis (Robertson, Calderon, Carrera, Stark, Zherdmant & Austin 1998; Soto‐Rodriguez, Roque, Lizarraga‐Partida, Guerra‐Flores, Gomezgil 2003) and, recently, this species has been found to cause serious mortality in various marine fish from diverse geographical regions, including the United States, Taiwan, Japan and Korea (Yii, Yang & Lee 1997; Nishimori, Hasegaw. Numat & Wakabayash 1998; Soffientino, Gwaltney, Nelson, Specker, Mauel & Gomez‐Chiarri 1999; Zhang & Austin 2000; Won, Kim & Park 2006).…”
