Characterization of Zr(IV)–Phosphonate Thin Films Which Inhibit O[sub 2] Reduction on AA2024-T3

Abstract: Zr͑IV͒-alkyl-phosphonate and Zr͑IV͒-aryl-phosphonate thin films of varying compositions were investigated for corrosion inhibition capabilities on AA2024-T3. A strong correlation between the alkyl chain length and the ability of these self-assembled systems to inhibit the O 2 reduction reaction at the alloy surface was found. In particular, modification using Zr͑IV͒-octadecylphosphonate initially inhibits O 2 reduction currents by more than 2 orders of magnitude in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 at a potential of Ϫ0.80 V vs … Show more

“…While more than half of the corrosion SECM publications focused on investigating corrosion mechanisms, a large number studied corrosion mitigation strategies. Several strategies are routinely employed to prevent corrosion and have been studied using SECM and can be grouped as described below: conversion coatings corrosion inhibitors polymer coatings surface treatments, i.e. mechanical stress …”

“…The absence of the two flanking bands confirms that the phosphonate binds in tridentate mode. 69,70 The strong band is assigned to the asymmetric stretch of phosphonate (P=O), and is characteristic for organozirconium phosphonate compounds. [71][72][73] For example, zirconium phenylphosphonate is a layered compound with zirconium and tridentate phosphonate making up one layer and the phenyl substituents separating the layers, see Figure 7D and S49.…”

“…However, environmental laws in many countries have imposed severe restrictions on the use of chromate (Cr 6+ ) in order to reduce environmental pollution and health hazards [2]. Consequently, most of the researches have focused on the development of various novel and effective conversion coating processes for the treatment of aluminium alloys [3][4][5][6][7], of which the cerium-based conversion coating is one of the most promising replacements [8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
