Characterization of β‐adrenoceptors in the syrian hamster harderian gland: Sexual differences and effects of either castration of superior cervical ganglionectomy

Abstract: Scatchard analysis of saturation isotherms of [125I]-iodopindolol was used to characterize beta-adrenoceptor density (Bmax) and affinity constant (Kd) in female and male hamster Harderian glands. Single-point experiments were also completed in intact females, intact males, and castrated or superior cervical ganglionectomized males. Scatchard analysis described a single population of binding sites with a Bmax of 292.2 +/- 45.1 fmol/mg protein (X +/- SEM, n = 6) in females and 18.2 +/- 3.0 fmol/mg protein (n = 6… Show more

“…The reason for the difference in binding densities be tween sexes remains unknown. Gender-asso ciated differences in the density of p-receptors [27], gene expression [6], and in the activities of different enzymes [28] have also been found in the harderian gland of the Syrian hamster.…”

“…Our results indicate a greater [3-receptor number and affinity in males for the extraorbital lacrimal gland, and a higher [3-receptor number but lower affinity in females for the Harderian gland (Pangerl et al, 1989). The effect of sex steroids on J3-adrenergic receptors seems to differ from tissue to tissue and is probably closely related to the function of the organ.…”

“…Furthermore we recently reported a sexual dimorphism of 13-adrenoceptors in the intraorbital Harderian gland of Syrian hamsters (Pangerl et al, 1989). Whereas cz-adrenoceptors in the lacrimal gland have been characterized with binding studies as al-type receptors (Mauduit et al, 1986), [3-adrenoceptors have not been investigated.…”

“…It has been reported that castration in the male rat results in an increase in the β-adrenoceptor in the pituitary gland and cerebral cortex (Petrovic et al 1984), and estrogen administration has been shown to increase β-adrenoceptor binding in fetal lung (Moawad et al 1985). In the golden hamster the female gland has a higher binding value of [ 125 I]-iodopindolol binding to β-adrenoceptor than in the male and castration in males increases the binding value to female levels (Pangerl et al 1989). Androgen and estrogen receptors have been demonstrated in the Harderian gland of the golden hamster (Vilchis and Perez-Palacios 1989).…”
