Characterization of β‐cyclodextrin modified SiO2

Abstract: Silica particles containing a layer of β-cyclodextrins were synthesized using a modified method of Armstrong (1985). The modified silica particles were extensively characterized to both the presence and amount of β-cyclodextrin introduced onto the surface. Raman confirmed that β-cyclodextrin was introduced onto the particle. The combination of thermogravmetric analysis (TGA) and direct pyrolysis mass spectroscopy were used to determine the amount and the chemical composition of organic material present on the … Show more

“…The amount of benzimidazole grafted onto the graphene was calculated through the following equation, [25] using the nitrogen content of G-BI-Pd from EDS analysis: where W t is the weight percent of the element measured, X is the theoretical weight percent of the element in the molecule and Y is the theoretical molecular weight of the molecule. Benzimidazole has carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of 71.18, 5.08 and 23.72 wt% with M w of 118 g mol −1 .…”

“…TGA has been proved to give good quantitative results relative to the Br content of the samples in previous publications on similar systems because specic organic molecules pyrolyze at a specic temperature. 41 Using the assumption that under 200 C the weight loss was caused by the removal of water absorbed physically, the additional weight losses from SiO 2 and SiO 2 -NH-Br were attributed to pyrolysis of hydroxyl groups and the introduced APTES respectively. On the basis of the data, it is feasible to quantify the yields of the synthesis using TGA.…”
