Santos et al 1 disaggregated Asian subgroups to unveil disparities in Asian American representation and progression in academic medicine. Analyzing a large dataset from the Association of American Medical Colleges, they illuminated pervasive underrepresentation of Laotian individuals, Cambodian individuals, and Filipino individuals at every career stage, from medical school matriculants to faculty. Critically, over almost a decade of data, no significant change in representation was found for Laotian individuals and Cambodian individuals-including 0 Cambodian residents in 4 specialties and 0Laotian residents in 8 specialties. Unsurprisingly, these same groups, in addition to Indonesian and Vietnamese groups, are underrepresented among the faculty. The history of Asian individuals in America is a rich tapestry woven from diverse threads of cultures, migration, and experiences. Inspired by the Black Power movement, the term Asian American was coined in the 1960s to unite Asian voices in opposition to the Vietnam War.
