Charge equalisation for series‐connected LiFePO 4 battery strings

Abstract: LiFePO 4 batteries are suitable for high power applications because of their advantages of large discharge current and high efficiency. Owing to the characteristics of LiFePO 4 batteries, it may cause overcharge/over-discharge and reduce the cycle life of the battery when series-connected batteries are used. This study proposes a charge equaliser based on an interleaved active clamp flyback converter. The interleaved topology reduces the output ripple current. Therefore the rectifier diode conduction loss can … Show more

“…The equalizer can be classified into two categories namely dissipative and non-dissipative. The dissipative method used the shunt resistors that are connected across the battery string in order dissipate the excess voltage [1]. In dissipative shunting method [2], the dissipative resistors are used for equalizing which are connected across the batteries using switches or relays.…”

“…Many non-dissipative schemes for higher efficiency were proposed in literature [1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11,12,13,14]. However, in most of the schemes, the costs are relatively high because each battery cell needs two or more electrical switches [2,5,7,9,10,11,13].…”

“…However, in most of the schemes, the costs are relatively high because each battery cell needs two or more electrical switches [2,5,7,9,10,11,13]. Or the voltage tolerance of each switch is high when the switch is connected to series battery cells [3,5,14,15], or much more diodes and capacitors are used [4,12], and are not able to do modularization either.…”

“…When multiple supercapacitors are connected in series, the cell imbalance is a serious problem [12,13]. The cell imbalance of supercapacitors is typically caused by manufacturing and environmental factors [14][15][16].…”
