Charge orders in organic charge-transfer salts

Abstract: Motivated by recent experimental suggestions of charge-order-driven ferroelectricity in organic charge-transfer salts, such as κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Cl, we investigate magnetic and charge-ordered phases that emerge in an extended twoorbital Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice at 3/4 filling. This model takes into account the presence of two organic BEDT-TTF molecules, which form a dimer on each site of the lattice, and includes short-range intramolecular and intermolecular interactions and… Show more

“…The DAF and PCO phases are insulating at n hole = 1/2. They have also been found in previous studies for the 3/4-filled Hubbard models 11,31,49 and the effective strong coupling models 33,34 , and are stabilized in the relevant parameter regions for κ-(ET) 2 X. Experimentally, the DAF phase is widely observed in κ-(ET) 2 X as AF dimer-Mott insulator and the PCO phase is proposed to be related to the dielectric anomaly observed in κ-(ET) 2 Cu 2 (CN) 3 (κ-CN) 36 and the insulating phase in κ-(ET) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Cl 55 . Note that SC is a metastable state for U/t b1 =7-11.5, lying on each side of the DAF-PCO boundary.…”

“…2a) and metallic for other hole den-sities. Note that the 3-fold CO-2 phase is stabilized also for n hole = 1/2 when V b1 /U is larger ( 0.55) 29,31 and is smoothly connected in the parameter space. While the 3-fold CO-1 phase is accompanied by the magnetic order, 3-fold CO-2 is nonmagnetic.…”

“…Note that the on-site U term in the dimer model corresponds to the Coulomb interaction in the dimer where one can approximate 2,32 U dim ≈ 2t 1 , while the on-site U in the molecule model corresponds to the Coulomb interaction in the molecule U mol . In the present work we do not include inter-site Coulomb contributions 33 . Please note that the inclusion of intermolecular Coulomb repulsion allows for the possibility of describing charge density wave phases in proximity to superconductivity 34,40 .…”

“…1c, t′/t (= 0.83-0.99) in κ-CN is approximately equal to one, whereas t′/t (= 0.44-0.52) in κ-Cl is significantly smaller 27,28 . In addition, previous theoretical studies 13,14,[29][30][31] and dielectric measurements 8,9 have reported that they include the instability to CO, wherein charges in each dimer are disproportionate. In κ-Cl, the dielectric constant exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior with decreasing temperature down to T c ; below this, a hysteresis loop is observed in the polarization-electric-field curve 9 .…”
