Although AI will undoubtedly have a prominent role in the cultivation of language learning, its application in modern-day English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms remains limited. The failure to adapt theory to practice may be the result of assumptions about technology, which posit that all learners will benefit equally from unilateral adoption of new techniques. In reality, the benefits of specific AI technologies may differ significantly based on characteristics of an educational environment. In Confucian countries, for example, traditional cultural values for group action may adversely impact autonomous learning styles that value LLM “tutors” like ChatGPT. It is essential that cultural and contextual factors of an educational environment be considered before AI technologies are utilized. Therefore, the present book chapter examines educational variables associated with Confucian contexts, yielding insights for the improvement of EFL instruction.
