Chatter Detection in Variable Cutting Depth Side Milling Using VMD and Vibration Characteristics Analysis

Abstract: Chatter is a key factor affecting tool wear, workpiece surface quality and cutting efficiency. When milling thin-walled parts, it is difficult to extract the chatter frequency band due to the time-varying characteristics of the dynamic parameters of the machining system. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) shows good performance in signal processing, but the decomposition result of this algorithm is limited by the influence of initialization parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes a scheme to determine the… Show more

“…Simulated signals have been widely used as a convenient input to assess signal processing algorithms for chatter detection or to validate some proposed chatter features, for instance, as shown in [120,121,130,141,164,194,234,235,[261][262][263]. Using model-based simulation for AI training and experimental signals for testing has also been reported, such as by Ozgur and Sener [89] and Vashisht and Peng [199].…”

“…Chatter is regarded as a bottleneck that severely reduces productivity and surface quality, wears down tools, and produces undesirable noise during the machining process [1][2][3][4]. Due to the characteristics of low stiffness, chatter can occur during the whole machining process when milling thin-walled parts [5,6].…”

“…In engineering practice, the vibration of the device is often effectively controlled by avoiding resonance. At present, many scholars have done a lot of research on modal analysis and vibration testing methods [2]- [4].…”
