Checklist, distribution, diversity, and rarity of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) in Slovakia

Patrik Macko,
Tomáš Derka,
Michaela Šamulková
et al.

Abstract: Despite the essential role of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) in freshwater ecosystems and their long-term use in research and routine biomonitoring in the Carpathian and Pannonian ecoregions, their distribution data are fragmentary and outdated. All published and unpublished data on mayflies from Slovakia was gathered and a database of > 15,000 species records from 2206 localities built with the aims (i) to critically revise available data and assess the completeness of the species inventory, (ii) to identify… Show more

“…covering ~70% of the known national mayfly fauna (76 of 109 valid species). We were unable to collect and analyse samples of six species that are considered regionally extinct and another eight that have not been recorded from Slovakia since 2010 (for a review, see Macko et al, 2023). Although the material analysed in this study did not cover all species, the data obtained represent the secondrichest reference library of mayflies in Europe (Table 1), significantly improving the feasibility of molecular methods in freshwater biomonitoring (Leese et al, 2018).…”

“…Although the territory of Slovakia belongs to the countries with a long tradition of mayfly research (Derka, 2003a(Derka, , 2003bLanda, 1969;Landa & Soldán, 1989;Mišíková-Elexová et al, 2010 and based on previous faunistic data, it harbours almost one third of known mayfly fauna (109 species) of the western Paleartic (Bauernfeind & Soldán, 2012;Derka, 2003a;Macko et al, 2023), studies on their genetic diversity are still very rare (e.g. Polášek et al, 2018).…”
