Checklist of rodents and insectivores of the Crimean Peninsula

Abstract: A dataset comprising 6806 records is presented of 17 (of total 24) rodent and insectivore species from the Crimean Peninsula collected during a 35-year period. All records are stored in the Public Mammal Database (Mammals of Russia; http://rusmam.ru/). The density of occurrence points allows visual evaluation of species distribution, even on large-scale maps. Each record contains the species name, locality description, and geographic coordinates, coordinate accuracy, date and author of the record, data source,… Show more

“…Small rodents and insectivores have great epidemiological importance, can be intermediate, reservoir and hosts of pathogens of many infectious diseases and helminthiases in humans, wild and domestic animals ( Tovpinets et al 2020 , Kirillova 2011 , Hornok et al 2015 ). A particular danger is posed by semi-synanthropic and synanthropic rodents, which, by inhabiting settlements, can transmit helminths to humans ( Kirillova 2011 ).…”

“…There is a need to review the species composition of rodents and insectivores in all regions of Russia, and the work by Tovpinets et al (2020) on the Crimean Peninsula serves as an example of such research. Studies of rodent and insectivore diversity and distribution have a long history, but there are no lists for many regions of Russia of rodent and insectivorous species.…”
