Checklist of the Anostraca

Abstract: In this checklist, we number the named anostracan fauna of the world at 258 species and seven subspecies organized in 21 genera. The list contains all species described through 31 December 1993, and those new species names made available in previous pages of this volume. The most species rich genus is Streptocephalus with 58 described species level taxa. Chirocephalus with 43, Branchinecta 35, and Branchinella 33 occupy the next three places. With the exception of Branchipodopsis and Eubranchipus each having 1… Show more

“…Western North America possesses a high degree of endemism for fairy shrimp of the genus Branchinecta (Anostraca) (Belk and Brtek 1995;Belk and Fugate 2000;Belk and Rogers 2002). Branchinecta fairy shrimp predominately inhabit seasonal wetlands, which are currently being lost in California at an extremely high rate due to development and degradation by human activities (Belk 1998).…”

“…It is treated here as a nomen dubium, as the original description is inadequate, and examination of Brehm's figures strongly suggest that the specimens are immature (Belk and Brtek, 1995). Vaas (1952) and Brehm (1955) both produced figures of this species; however, those figures do not match, may contain errors, and may represent two different taxa (Belk and Brtek, 1995). There are no other records of Streptocephalus from any part of Indonesia, so it is very likely that these specimens represent new taxa.…”

“…There are no records of naturally occurring populations of the halophilic genus Artemia in SE Asia, although the genus is well known from India (Bond, 1934;Belk and Esparza, 1995) and China (Sars, 1901;Wei, 1992;Belk and Brtek, 1995). The United Nations agency Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in collaboration with the Artemia Reference Centre at Ghent University (Belgium) introduced Artemia francisana Kellogg, 1906 and a form from China to SE Asia to facilitate the aquaculture industry (Baert et al, 1997;Bo et al, 2004).…”

“…The high species richness of the Romanian Plain was noted already by Botnariuc (1948). Four endemic species have been accepted for this area: Chirocephalus orghidani Brtek, 1966, Branchipus intermedius Orghidan, 1947, Tanymastix motasi Orghidan, 1945, and Lynceus andronachensis Botnariuc, 1947(Botnariuc & Orghidan 1953, Belk & Brtek 1995. One more endemic species, Chirocephalus robustus Müller, 1966, was described from Transylvania (Müller 1966).…”
