Checkpoint Inhibitors and Therapeutic Vaccines for the Treatment of Chronic HBV Infection

Abstract: Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is highly effective in suppressing viral replication, but complete cure is rarely achieved. In recent years, substantial progress has been made in the development of immunotherapy to treat cancer. Applying these therapies to improve the management of chronic HBV infection is now being attempted, and has become an area of active research. Immunotherapy with vaccines and checkpoint inhibitors can boost T cell functions in vitro, and therefore may be used to … Show more

“…Additionally, immune recovery is not long lasting 15 . In addition to checkpoint inhibition, other treatment modalities aiming at invigorating T cell responses, such as therapeutic vaccines 16,17 as well as immunomodulatory or antigen lowering drugs in chronic viral infection 18 , will rely on the ability to overcome the dysfunctionality of exhausted T cells.…”

“…In the majority of cases, viral hepatitis can be prevented or treated. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B can be prevented by vaccination [ 12 ]. Effective treatments for hepatitis C are available but costly [ 13 ].…”
