“…Thus, the work developed by Shi et al (2008) demonstrated that chitosan/nano-TiO 2 composite emulsion prepared by inverse suspension technology had efficient antibacterial effect against E. coli, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans after short exposure time. Table 7 summarizes some of the studies found in bibliography about coagulation/flocculation with chitosan (Bough and Landes, 1976;Casal et al, 2006;Mukhopadhyay et al, 2003;Savant and Torres, 2000), acid precipitation (Sternberg et al, 1975), electrochemical process (Güven et al, 2008;Janson and Lewis, 1994) and alkaline subcritical water gasification (Muangrat et al, 2011) applied to cheese whey effluents. When raw or deproteinized CW were treated with chitosan, turbidity, protein and fats removals of 32e95%; 62e85%; 70e80% were experienced.…”

“…Polyelectrolytes such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) are also effective précipitants for proteins, and offer an operationally simple method for protein recovery which is easily scalable, produces a high purity and concentrated product stream, and does not denature the target protein (76). Unlike salt precipitation, only small quantities of precipitant are used, from 5 to 25% of the protein by weight.…”
