Chelation Therapy Associated with Antioxidant Supplementation Can Decrease Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Multiple Sclerosis: Preliminary Results

Abstract: An imbalance of oxy-inflammation status has been involved in axonal damage and demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of an antioxidant treatment (calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetracetic acid—EDTA) chelation therapy associated with a micronutrient complex in MS patients. A total of 20 MS patients and 20 healthy subjects, enrolled as a control group (CTR), were recruited. We measured the plasma ROS production and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) by a d… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the antioxidant mechanism is not the only one responsible against toxicity, since binding may also be beneficial. The efficacy of treatment with antioxidants is strongly associated with chelation therapy for the treatment of several diseases [42]. Furthermore, antioxidants are not clinically adopted against heavy metal-induced cell damage, even though some recent outcomes suggested their protective effect [28].…”

“…Similarly, new advances in drug development include the introduction of improved drug posology [67][68][69], different routes of administration [70,71], new improved formulations, nanomedicines and other drug carriers, and drug combinations [71][72][73][74]. In the meantime, it should be noted that millions of patients choose to be treated in alternative medicine clinics using non-conventional treatments including a wide range of folk medicines, nutraceuticals and alternative medicinal drugs and combinations [75][76][77][78][79].…”
