Chemical agents incineration exhaust fallout and effects

Abstract: Incineration strengths of hazardous (2.8 £ 10 8 mg/s) and nonhazardous (6.31£10 8 mg/s) materials were found from the quantities to be incinerated, chemical formulas, and the incineration time. The smoke stack geometry, exhaust dynamics, and different atmospheric stability conditions were used in the Gaussian model to predict the maximum concentration distances of 0.5 to about 6 km at the ground level in the downwind direction. However, trailing edges of some of exhaust distributions were found to extend beyon… Show more

“…Incinerators can also produce cancer-causing toxins (i.e. dioxins and furans), putting human health and the environment at risks (Adel 2004). Despite a legal success in challenging provincial government and Mondi against the proposal, the campaign failed to halt the installation of the incinerator.…”

“…Health effects of waste incineration include transferring of toxic metals into the human blood stream by inhalation, deposition and absorption (Lee et al 2004) and the production of carcinogenic toxins (i.e. dioxins and furans) (Adel 2004). Despite a successful civil society legal challenge, the Provincial Government's Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA) granted Mondi permission for construction after the company resubmitted a similar application for installation.…”

The community strongly opposed the incinerator due to health concerns.…”
