This research was conducted on five oilfields in the Mishrif reservoir, southern Iraq, to illustrate the effects of permeability on the damage caused by the injection of river water into the oilfield. Oilfield flooding has dramatically changed the pH and brine chemistry of the reservoir and resulted in the deposition of carbonates and native sulfur. The air permeability test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis revealed how the precipitated minerals and materials (e.g., residual heavy oil, asphaltene, wax, native sulfur and authigenic and diagenetic clay minerals) reduced the permeability by lining the pore necks. The PHREEQC software and saturation index (SI) model revealed several types of porelining scales formed in a porous matrix. The SI model indicates that barite, celestite, calcite and pyrite are common scales lining the pore spaces, which precipitated in response to the injection of sulfate-and carbonate-rich river water into an oil well. This research generated useful findings that can be taken into consideration for future oil production worldwide. Additionally, the permeability values were used as evidence for discrimination of sedimentary environment, particularly reef and non-reef facies.

The paper generates a geological model of a giant Middle East oil reservoir, the model constructed based on the field data of 161 wells. The main aim of the paper was to recognize the value of the reservoir to investigate the feasibility of working on the reservoir modeling prior to the final decision of the investment for further development of this oilfield. Well log, deviation survey, 2D/3D interpreted seismic structural maps, facies, and core test were utilized to construct the developed geological model based on comprehensive interpretation and correlation processes using the PETREL platform. The geological model mainly aims to estimate stock-tank oil initially in place of the reservoir. In addition, three scenarios were applied based on sensitivity and uncertainty of five variables to determine an accurate estimation of stock-tank oil initially in place of the reservoir. The oil-water contact appeared to be the major uncertain parameter for stock-tank oil initially in place estimation because the available geological and field data was not enough to demonstrate it confidently, and only 13% of the total wells have penetrated the water zone in the Mishrif formation. The results of all scenarios indicate that the reservoir has huge stock-tank oil initially in place. The importance of developing this oilfield is validated by its very high stock-tank oil. This is where the value of this study becomes obvious.

Porosity is important because it reflects the presence of oil reserves. Hence, the number of underground reserves and a direct influence on the essential petrophysical parameters, such as permeability and saturation, are related to connected pores. Also, the selection of perforation interval and recommended drilling additional infill wells. For the estimation two distinct methods are used to obtain the results: the first method is based on conventional equations that utilize porosity logs. In contrast, the second approach relies on statistical methods based on making matrices dependent on rock and fluid composition and solving the equations (matrices) instantaneously. In which records have entered as equations, and the matrix is solved in one step, the porosity, saturation, and volume of minerals embedded inside the rock formations were obtained. The results indicated that the porosity was determined using statistical and conventional approaches matched to the core porosity. In the end, statistical techniques afford a different path for calculation and provide outcomes that can be used in all situations, particularly when the rock has many types of components. Furthermore, it is not based on conventional equations and overcomes the problems coming from the unreliability of porosity logs in formations containing mixed minerals.
