Chemical and Mechanical Roughening Treatments of a Supra-Nano Composite Resin Surface: SEM and Topographic Analysis

Abstract: Background: Repairing a restoration is a more advantageous and less invasive alternative to its total makeover. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of chemical and mechanical surface treatments aimed at increasing the roughness of a supra-nano composite resin. Methods: 27 cylindrical blocks of microhybrid composite were made. The samples were randomly divided into nine groups (n = 3). The samples’ surface was treated differently per each group: acid etching (35% H3PO4, 30 s and 60 s), diamond bur … Show more

“…36 This could be attributed to the fact that sandblasting creates a surface with more irregularities and an increased number of micro retentive cavities than diamond bur abrasion. 37,38 This result was confirmed by the SEM observations obtained in this study (Figure 2), where sandblasted surfaces have micropits, and more irregular topography than surfaces roughened with a diamond bur, which could increase the surface area and enhance micromechanical interlocking.…”

“…To enhance chemical bonding between the acrylic resin and resin composite, apply an adhesive agent for conditioning the acrylic resin surface that is efficient enough [9,16]. It has been suggested that a variety of micromechanical surface modification techniques and chemical surface treatment through adhesive systems can improve the ability to repair bonds in acrylic resin repaired using resin composite [16][17][18]. Additionally, surface treatment of acrylic resin with MMA (methyl methacrylate) has been shown to enhance the bonding ability of acrylic resin when repaired with resin composite [5,[19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…The cavity margin of the cement preparation therefore represents a weak point in the interface of the adhesive restoration. 49 50 51 52 53 54 In the presence of these anatomical assumptions, new technologies can be useful providing materials with high adaptability and marginal seal, with low polymerization shrinkage and therefore with reduced tension forces on the adhesive interface. Successfully Lo Giudice et al 8 used a flowable composite at the interface with the root cementum to exploit the low elastic modulus of the material to reduce the effects of polymerization stress; however, it was impossible to obtain a marginal seal.…”
