Chemical Characterization, Anti inflammatory and Analgesic Properties of Jatropha Multifida Root Bark

Abstract: Jatropha multifida is used in African folk medicine for the treatment of infection, pain, fever, various inflammatory conditions, tumor and tumor related diseases. The present study investigated the phytochemical constituents of the powdered root bark using established standard procedures. The methanol root bark extract at doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg was subjected to evaluation of anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities in experimental animal models. The anti-inflammatory activity was estima… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2, 2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging with quercetin as standard. [ 9 ] To perform each test, 250 µL of the extracts or standard (50–100 mg/mL) dissolved in methanol were added to 1500 µL of 100 µmol/mL methanolic DPPH. [ 10 ] A blank was constituted with methanol.…”

“…[ 8 ] Roots and stem contained lathyrane (diterpenoid), responsible of anticancer, cytotoxic, antitumor, antimalarial, antileshmanial, antimicrobial, insecticidal and molluscidal activities of J. multifida . [ 9 ] Considering the vast potentiality of J. multifida to cure ailments, much work has been done on the root and the stem. We undertook this study to evaluate the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of crude extracts of this plant.…”

“…The parts of this plant that can be used are its leaves, sap, and seeds oil, which have been utilized to treat helminthiasis, infections in open wounds, and various inflammatory conditions of the skin. 2 Generally, an extract of the parts of a particular plant is used to test the plant's potential effects and therapeutic benefits. One of the more readily made extracts is a liquid extract, which is produced by using solvents as extractors.…”

“…5 J. multifida is used in African folk medicine for the treatment of infection, pain, fever, various inflammatory conditions, tumor and tumor related diseases. 6 Chemical investigation of the J. multifida has led to the isolation of nine diterpenoids, including a new jatromulone A, four podocarpane diterpenoids, two lathyrane-type diterpenoids and two dinorditerpenoids. 7 Among the components already isolated from different parts of the plant and identified are diterpenes 15-O-acetyl japodagrone, (4E)jatrogrosidentadione acetate, (4E)-jatrogrossidentadione, multifidone, multidione, multifolone.…”
