Chemical characterization of the oligosaccharides in Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) milk and colostrum

Abstract: Bactrian camel milk and colostrum are commonly used as foods in Mongolia, whose people believe that these products promote human health. It has been hypothesized that milk oligosaccharides are biologically significant components of human milk, acting as receptor analogs that inhibit the attachment of pathogenic microorganisms to the colonic mucosa, and as prebiotics, which stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria within the infant colon. To evaluate their biological significance, we studied the oligosaccharides … Show more

“…17) A highly negatively charged fraction contained oligosaccharides which were assumed to be phophorylated sialyl oligosaccharides, as well as DSL and disialyllactosamine. Neu5Gc-containing oligosaccharides constituted less than 5% of the acidic oligosaccharide fraction, and very small amounts of O-acetylated sialyllactose and sialyllactosamine were detected.…”

“…Increased concentrations of HMOs in breast milk have been associated with decreased HIV transmission during breastfeeding (11). In addition, in comparison to the milks of the other species evaluated here, including RM, the oligosaccharides present in human breast milk are more abundant and diverse (32,36,40,41). Furthermore, HMOs are not affected by Holder pasteurization and are present in the skim fraction of breast milk (38).…”

“…Milk oligosaccharides of many mammals have been studied (13,14,(75)(76)(77)(78)(79)(80)(81). However, studies from non-primate mammals are difficult to compare in quantitative terms because comprehensive profiling have not been performed.…”
