Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils from Myrcia alagoensis (Myrtaceae)

Abstract: The chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils obtained from fresh and dried leaves of Myrcia alagoensis O. Berg, collected in a secondary forest remnant in northeastern Brazil, was compared. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from fresh and dried leaves, and analysed by GC/FID and GC/MS. The antimicrobial properties of the oils were investigated against five bacteria by determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration … Show more

“…globulus had the lowest proportions of approximate digestibility, i.e., the larvae did not digest a significant amount of the food ingested. The leaves of tree species of Myrtaceae are characterized by having a high number of essential oil glands [ 83 , 84 ]. Larvae of Tipula lateralis Meigen, 1830 (Diptera, Tipulidae) fed with leaves of E .…”

“…For the remaining microorganisms, EO showed MIC results greater than 1000 µg/mL. EO of Myrcia alogenensis (Silva et al, 2013) and Myrcia myrtifolia (Cerqueira et al, 2007) exhibited activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In contrast, EO from Myrcia fallax (Alarcón et al, 2009) and Myrcia splendens (Jiménez et al, 2012) were active against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis.…”

“…The leaves essential oils of M. myrtillifolia showed antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms, with a moderate toxicity against Artemia salina [30]. The essential oils of M. alagoensis exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial action, on both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, and the former were more sensitive to the essential oil from the fresh leaves [21]. Antibacterial activity was observed when essential oil from the stems of M. splendens was tested [37].…”
