Chemical Composition and Functional Properties of Spray-Dried Animal Plasma and Its Contributions to Livestock and Pet Health: A Review

Katarzyna Kazimierska,
Wioletta Biel

Abstract: Spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) is a functional ingredient derived from healthy animal blood, used as a nutritional additive in livestock and pet nutrition. SDAP is rich in macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds such as immunoglobulins, albumin, growth factors, peptides, transferrin, and enzymes. This review focuses on the chemical composition of SDAP from porcine, bovine, and poultry sources, including protein quality and mineral profile. SDAP enhances performance and health in monogastric f… Show more

“…Wheat gluten had numerically higher protein and fat contents than SDAP and lower ash content (Table 2). The higher ash content in SDAP is attributed to the intrinsic minerals in blood to maintain the body osmotic pressure and to the residual anticoagulant added to blood to avoid coagulation during collection and processing [10].…”

“…In addition to all the processing properties of SDAP in wet pet food, two recent reviews [9,10] summarized many other benefits associated with the use of SDAP in animal feed, including dog and cat food. Nutritionally, SDAP has a high protein concentration with an appropriate composition of amino acids, and it is highly digestible for dogs and cats [11][12][13].…”

“…Additionally, as an extra safety precaution, many manufacturers adopt the practice of storing SDAP at room temperature (above 20 • C) for at least 14 days before its release for sale [24,25]. Several review papers have provided detailed summaries of the production process of SDAP and its safety [22,26,27], indicating that it is an approved and safe additive in animal nutrition and pet food production.…”
