Chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities and evaluation of cytotoxicity of the fractions obtained fromSelaginella convoluta(Arn.) Spring (Selaginellaceae)

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities and cytotoxicity of fractions from Selaginella convoluta, obtained by liquid-liquid extraction using hexane (Sc-Hex), chloroform (Sc-CHCl 3 ) and ethyl acetate (Sc-AcOEt). The phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminium chloride methods, respectively. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and b-carotene-l… Show more

“…S. inaequalifolia showed good antagonistic activity against S. aureus , E. coli and C. albicans [ 27 ]. S. convoluta showed significant antibacterial potential against B. cereus , E. coli , S. enterica , S. marcescens , K. pneumoniae , S. flexneri , E. faecalis and S. aureus [ 28 ]. S. tamariscina is known to possess potent activity against oral bacterial pathogens such as P. gingivalis , P. intermedia , S. mutans , S. sobrinus , S. gordonii , F. nucleatum , S. sanguinis , S. anginosus , S. ratti , A. actinomycetemcomitans , S. parasanguinis , S. criceti and S. downei [ 29 ].…”

“…The aromatic benzene rings with substituted hydroxyl groups are responsible for their biological activity through the capacity to eliminate or absorb free radicals, and to chelate reactive oxygen species molecules formators. Furthermore, the effectiveness is generally proportional to the number of hydroxyl (OH) groups present in their aromatic rings 51 . phenols content.…”

“…The first mentioned correlation showed no hit with a significance ≤ 0.05, which is in agreement with the additive/synergistic mode of action of compounds in such complex matrixes as plant crude extracts [ 45 ]. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids is well known for flavonoids isolated from Selaginella species [ 46 ], but the antioxidant activity of (neo)lignans [ 47 ] and selaginellins [ 33 ] has not been verified yet. However, it has to be mentioned that biochemical assays have their limitations—they omit such important parameters as compound availability, first-pass metabolism, ability to cross the membranes, etc.…”
