Chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Lantana camara Linn leaves essential oil from Burkina Faso

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine chemical composition and biological activity of essential oil of the leaves of Lantana camara from Burkina Faso. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and Ferric reduction antioxidant power (FRAP) test. Antimicrobial activity was assessed by agar disc diffusion method and microdilution method. The main components of essenti… Show more

“…Hydrogen peroxide was more effectively quenched by the extract (IC 50 = 90 μ g/mL) than gallic acid at p > 0.05, although the two compounds exhibited similar quenching abilities [ 55 ]. The IC 50 value of the essential oil extracted from the leaves was 21.99 μ L, which is the maximum level of radical scavenging activity [ 28 ]. The ethanolic fruit extract had IC 50 values of 49.87, 69.06, and 49.36 μ g/mL in the DPPH, deoxyribose degradation, and lipid peroxidation models, demonstrating its outstanding antioxidant capabilities [ 53 ].…”

“…Isolated from the fruits were compounds with significant antimicrobial activity against the strains used in the study, including microcarposide. Lupeol, betulinic acid, -sitosterol glucoside, methyl gallate, [ 45 ] humulene-1,2-epoxide, caryophyllene oxide, neryl acetone-caryophyllene, salvia-4 (14)-ene1-one, and linalool are some of the main components of the essential oil of D. microcarpum leaves, which have antimicrobial properties [ 28 ]. This does not rule out the potential that other components, either alone or in combination with important molecules, do not contribute to these biological features.…”

“…Lantana camara has several subspecies and numerous ornamental cultivars [71,72] and as such, the volatile phytochemistry has shown wide variation [65] . In order to place the volatile phytochemistry of the specimens from Vietnam into perspective, a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was carried out comparing the major (37) essential oil components of 60 essential oil compositions reported in the literature [65,66,73–117] along with the four specimens from Vietnam ( Figure 1). The cluster analysis reveals five clusters and one outlier.…”

“…The various results obtained from the in vitro study of the essential oils of Ocimum gratissimum, Cymbopogon citractus and Eucalyptus globulus prove that they have great potential in the development of a new type of fungicide as an alternative to synthetic fungicides [25]. Essential oils have demonstrated antimicobial activity, their broad spectrum of actions on fungi has already been highlighted [26]. Eucalyptus globulus essential oil in the gas phase showed anti-rot activity before and after harvest, which is confirmed by our results on the germ studied [27].…”
