Introduction: Sclerocarya birrea stem-bark is widely used for the treatment of many medical conditions. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular complications of diabetes mellitus. The study, other than phytochemical composition, evaluated the anti-glycation and AGEs-protein cross-link breaking effects of S. birrea stem-bark extracts. Methods: Different S. birrea extracts and aminoguanidine (used as control) were incubated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and glucose/fructose at 37oC for 40 days. Amounts of fluorescent AGEs (FAGEs) and immunogenic AGEs formed were determined. Anti-glycation activity percentage of each extract and aminoguanidine was calculated. Their AGEs-protein cross-link breaking abilities were also assessed. Standard techniques were employed for phytochemical screening. Volatile compounds were identified by means of gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: S. birrea stem-bark n-hexane extract was statistically more effective than aminoguanidine against the formation of total immunogenic AGEs (P<0.05). For FAGEs, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts exerted significantly higher anti-glycation effects than aminoguanidine (P<0.001). Methanol extract exhibited the highest anti-glycation effect with an average IC50 value of 0.142 mg/mL against FAGEs. All extracts were effective in releasing BSA from the preformed collagen-AGEs-BSA cross-links. GC-MS enabled the identification of many biologically important compounds, including campesterol, stigmasterol, and 1-heptatricontanol. Conclusion: S. birrea stem-bark has a potential for usage in the management of complications in uncontrolled glucose metabolism.

The development and production of secondary metabolites from priceless medicinal plants are restricted by drought stress. Mentha pulegium L. belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is a significant plant grown in the Mediterranean region for its medicinal and aesthetic properties. This study investigated the effects of three polyethylene glycol (PEG) (0, 5, and 10%) as a drought stress inducer and four silicon nanoparticle (SiNP) (0, 25, 50, and 100 ppm) concentrations as an elicitor to overcome the adverse effect of drought stress, on the growth parameters and bioactive chemical composition of M. pulegium L. plants grown in vitro. The experiment was performed as a factorial experiment using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 12 treatments with two factors (3 PEG × 4 SiNPs concentrations), 6 replicates were used for each treatment for a total of 72 experimental units.The percentage of shoot formation was inversely proportional to the PEG concentration; for the highest PEG concentration, the lowest percentage of shoot formation (70.26%) was achieved at 10% PEG. SiNPs at 50 ppm enhanced shoot formation, the number of shoots, shoot height, fresh and dry weight, rosmarinic acid, total phenols, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. The methanol extract from M. pulegium revealed the presence of significant secondary metabolites using gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The principal constituents of the extract were limonene (2.51, 2.99%), linalool (3.84, 4.64%), geraniol (6.49, 8.77%), menthol (59.73, 65.43%), pulegone (3.76, 2.76%) and hexadecanoic acid methyl ester or methyl palmitate (3.2, 4.71%) for the 0 ppm SiNPs, PEG 0% and 50 ppm SiNPs, and PEG 10%, respectively. Most of the chemical components identified by GC‒MS in the methanol extract were greater in the 50 ppm SiNP and 10% PEG treatment groups than in the control group. SiNP improves drought tolerance by regulating biosynthesis and accumulating some osmolytes and lessens the negative effects of polyethylene glycol-induced drought stress.Based on the results, the best treatment for most of the parameters was 50 ppm SiNPs combined with 10% PEG, the morphological and chemical characteristics were inversely proportional to the PEG concentration, as the highest PEG concentration (10%) had the lowest results. Most parameters decreased at the highest SiNP concentration (100 ppm), except for the DPPH scavenging percentage, as there was no significant difference between the 50 and 100 ppm SiNPs.

Cordia myxa L. is a medium-sized broad-leaved deciduous tree of flowering plant belongs to Boraginaceae. It grows naturally from dry desert India up to hills of Himalayas in India up to 1400 m elevation above mean sea level. Fruits are mostly used for pickle making and dried for its use in local off season vegetable recipes since long time. The ripe fruits are full of vitamins and its regular use is supposed to be helpful in good growth of hair. Lasuda preparations are, thus, good for people whose constitution might have tendency to go bald. In addition to fruit, Lasuda bark and roots are also very effective as a local remedy against cough, cold and various other ailments connected with indigestion and throat problems. At regional research laboratory of Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (India) we are working for the last 12 years on various aspects like propagation and development of promising strains of Cordia myxa. Grafting/budding techniques have been standardized to produce true to type precocious plants which bear flower and fruits in two to three years. However, flowering and fruiting has been observed in six months old seedling of seed origin, which can be ascribed to biochemical or cellular changes. Early flowering and fruiting is a rare phenomenon in tree seedlings of the species which otherwise flower at the age of 7-8 years. This could be very useful for manipulating the species at gene as well as physiological level in future to get early fruits and breeding of the species.
