Chemical Composition of the Essential Oils from Flower, Leaf, and Stem of Senecio Trapezuntinus Boiss. Grown in Turkey

Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of air-dried flower, leaf and stem of Senecio trapezuntinus Boiss were analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Thirty-eight compounds were identified, constituting over 91.7%, 86.2% and 73.5% of the total oil composition of flower, leaf and stem of S. trapezuntinus, respectively. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were shown to be the main group of constituents of all three part of the plant. The main component of the flower, leaf and stem essential oi… Show more

“…The essential oils from shade-dried plant parts flower-40g, leaf-48g and stem-57g of G. gelida were isolated by hydrodistillation in a British-type Clevenger apparatus using an ice bath 15 for cooling system 4 h yields: 0.06, 0.04 and 0.03 v/w , respectively . The volatile oils were taken by dissolving in HPLC grade hexane 1 mL , dried over anhydrous Na 2 SO 4 , and, after filtration, kept in the dark at 4 in sealed brown vials until tested 14,15 .…”

“…Despite this great diversity, only about one hundred and sixty papers devoted to the study of the essential oils and volatile compounds of Senecio species (which was the former genus of P. herzogii ) are reported in the SciFinder ® database [ 13 ]. Less than ten of them show the presence of low percentages (<2%) of thymol methyl ether and only three the occurrence of carvacrol methyl ether ( Table 2 ) [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Surprisingly, one paper mentions the ambiguous o -methyl thymol as an identified compound in the S. scandens essential oil [ 19 ].…”
