Kencana ungu (Ruellia tuberosa L.) atau pletokan merupakan salah satu tanaman liar yang dapat tumbuh di berbagai tempat. Tanaman ini (famili Acanthaceae) diketahui mengandung senyawa- senyawa fitokimia yang berpotensi sebagai antibakteri. Review artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui senyawa fitokimia dari berbagai bagian tanaman kencana ungu serta aktivitasnya sebagai antibakteri. Metode yang digunakan yaitu studi literatur dari berbagai sumber artikel ilmiah yang ditelusuri melalui Google Scholar, PubMed, Researchgate, Elsevier dan Science Direct dan disusun menjadi narrative review. Hasil studi literatur menunjukkan bahwa, tanaman kencana ungu mengandung berbagai jenis kandungan senyawa fitokimia yang diperoleh dari akar, umbi, batang, dan daun kencana ungu seperti flavonoid, tanin, saponin, alkaloid, steroid dan fenolik. Ekstrak bagian tanaman kencana ungu telah terbukti dapat menghambat bakteri seperti Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Klebsiella pneumonia, dan Pseudomonass aeruginosa. Aktivitas antibakteri yang paling tinggi terdapat pada seluruh bagian tanaman kencana ungu yang diekstraksi dengan pelarut metanol terhadap bakteri K. pneumonia dengan diameter zona hambat sebesar 26 mm. Data kandungan fitokimia dan aktivitas antibakteri ini dapat dipergunakan sebagai dasar penelitian lebih lanjut untuk pengembangan produk berbahan baku tanaman kencana ungu sebagai agen antibakteri yang potensial.

Rubus ellipticus is a native plant to India's tropical and subtropical regions and has been used as a traditional medicinal. The aim of the study was to identify and evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-arthritis activities of hydroethanolic extract of R. ellipticus leaves (HEERE). The leaves were collected from the Narkanda Valley, India and were shade-dried and finely ground to produce the powder. The hydroethanolic extract was utilized for phytochemical analysis to determine the existence of carbohydrate, phenolic, terpenoid, flavonoid, saponin, glycoside, tannin, protein, and alkaloid. The HEERE was further analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the characterization of the phytoconstituents. The antimicrobial activity was tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus as well as Aspergillus niger. To assess its anti-arthritic activities, different doses of HEERE were given orally to complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced albino Wistar rats for twenty-one days. The GC-MS analysis of hydroethanolic extracts from leaves detected and identified the presence of 33 phytochemical compounds. HEERE showed significant effects against E. coli, S. aureus, and A. niger strains at 600 ppm. Our data indicated that HEERE 200 mg/kg was more effective than 50 mg/kg as anti-arthritis. Paw volume, ankle-joint diameter, the number of leucocytes, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were all significantly reduced in experimental rats. Furthermore, when compared to respective standard drugs, the body weight, erythrocyte, hemoglobin, and synobium healing effect have all improved. These data demonstrated the potential of R. ellipticus for the long-term investigation of antimicrobial and anti-arthritic properties.

This review article on Rubus ellipticus mainly systematically summarizes classification, morphology, distribution, traditional uses, phytochemical constituents and biological activities. Rubus ellipticus is commonly known as Yellow Himalayan Raspberry and has been used as a traditional medicine to cure for fever, diarrhoea, gastralgia, skin infection, joint pain, wound healing, diabetes, anti-fertility agent, analgesic, antiepileptic, as renal tonic, ulceretc. Its phytochemicals analysis have revealed the presence of Phenolic compounds, flavonoids, terpenoids and steroids. The crude extract shows biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, anti-diabetic, anticancer, antiulcerogenic etc.
