Chemical constituents, antioxidant and antimocrobial activity of essential oil ofPogostemon paniculatus(Willd.)

Abstract: The essential oil extracted from the leaves of Pogostemon paniculatus (Willd.) Benth. (Lamiaceae), was analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nineteen compounds constituting 85.36% of the total oil were identified in the oil. Patchouli alcohol (30.65%), α-guaiene (10.67%), β-guaiene (9.09%), caryophyllene (8.64%), eicosene (5.27%) were the major constituents present. The essential oil was analysed for antimicrobial activity by disc diffusion assay and minimum inhibition concentration against… Show more

“…However, biological effects of guanidine N,N-dimethyl has never been reported. Meanwhile, oxime methoxy-phenyl and seychellene have been suggested to play a role as anti-oxidant [35,36]. Benzene 3-methylcyclopentyl was proposed to display anti-inflammatory properties [37] and 9-octadecenamide, phenol was reported to display anti-oxidant properties [37].…”

“…Furthermore, the anticancer and antioxidant activity of 1-octadecene has been reported (Renukadevi et al 2011). Eicosene and 2-tetradecene, are compounds that are suspected to contribute to the anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant ability of plant extracts (Manoj et al 2012;Tiloke et al 2018).…”

“…Patchouli oil has unique characteristics, including a long–lasting, woody, camphoraceous and earthy redolence [2] . It is listed as generally regarded as safe (GRAS) and so approved as a natural food additive by the US Food and Drug Administration [3] . Oil extracted from the whole aerial parts of patchouli consists of patchouli alcohol (PA) (55.7%), α-guaiene (13.1%), α-bulnesene (11.1%) and other compounds.…”
