Chemical Constituents from the Leaves of Annona reticulata and Their Inhibitory Effects on NO Production

Abstract: In the present study, the chemical investigation of the leaves of Annona reticulata has resulted in the identification of nine compounds, including annonaretin A, (1), a new triterpenoid. The purified compounds were subjected to the examination of their effects on NO inhibition in LPS-activated mouse peritoneal macrophages and most of them exhibited significant NO inhibition, with IC50 values in the range of 48.6 ± 1.2 and 99.8 ± 0.4 μM.

“…Inflammatory Diseases: Nine compounds were characterized from the leaves of A. reticulata L, by Thang et al, 2013 and their inhibitory activity on NO production was examined. The results provide a potential explanation for the use of the leaves of A. reticulata as an herbal medicine in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, and they may be potentially useful in developing new antiinflammatory agents 1 .…”

“…From various plants which are known for their medicinal value, the plants belonging to genus Annona are rich in phenolic compounds and are very useful for their therapeutic potentials. The Annona genus (Annonaceae) consists of about 119 species 1 . Annona reticulata is a semi-evergreen and small deciduous tree from the plant family Annonaceae 2 .…”

“…Aminoglycoside antibiotic, gentamicin shows a broad spectrum of activities against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections but with a high preference for latter and its major side effect is nephrotoxicity 17,18,19 . One of the best models for evaluating nephroprotective activity is gentamicin druginduced renal injury 20,21 . Many animal experiments have demonstrated the positive correlation between oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity 22 .…”
