Chemical Control of Tomato Early Blight Disease

Abstract: lternaria solani (Ellis and Martin) Jones and Grout, the causal of tomato early blight, attacks all tomato hybrids and varieties, either in open field or in greenhouse, causing a serious damage that led to decrease in tomato yield. The fungus A. solani was isolated from tomato leaves and fruits, showing typical symptoms of early blight, collected from different locations distributed in six Egyptian Governorates. Pathological studies cleared that A. solani isolate taken from Menufiya was the most aggressive one… Show more

“…Several Alternaria spp. have been found infecting potatoes and tomatoes in Egypt, including A. arborescens, A. alternata, A. phragmospora and A. solani (Abada et al 2008;El-Abd-Kareem et al 2009;Ashour et al 2012;El Gobashy et al 2018;Hussein and Voigt 2019;Attia et al 2020). Among these, A. solani is the most prevalent and leading cause of EB and A. alternata is the most prevalent species associated with leaf blight, whereas A. arborescens has been found to be the least prevalent in Egypt (El Gobashy et al 2018;Hussein and Voigt 2019).…”

“…About 4 million hectares of arable land are cultivated to produce tomatoes worldwide, which produces 100 million tons annually valued at between 5 and 6 billion US$ 12 . One of the most significant Solanaceous commodities in Egypt is the tomato, which is grown for both local consumption and exportation 13 . Notably, Egypt ranks among the top 10 tomato-producing countries in the world, producing 6.4 million tons of tomatoes annually on an estimated 181,000 acres 8 , 14 .…”

“…(2020), Egypt is considered the fifth country worldwide in tomato production, with 6.8 million MT productivity in 2019, compared to 8.6 million MT productivity in 2012. Tomato Early blight disease is considered the highest causal agent of tomato yield loss and reduced fruit quality (80%) in warm and humid regions caused by Alternaria solani (Ashour et al, 2012 andPandey et al, 2014). Early symptoms are recognized as a brown spot-on leaves, fruits, and stems, it's mode of action is to reduce the photosynthetic surface and cause the leaf lower part to fall (Meenakshi et al, 2014).…”
