Chemical Corrosion in Cast Iron in Soil-Water Medium

Abstract: Grey cast iron metal strips were allowed to rust in varying compositions of soil-water media under the controlled environment. The process of corrosion was monitored by non-electrochemical method. Assessment of the extent of corrosion was carried out, both visually and by the method of weight loss coupons. It was found that a 80:20 weight:volume percent (w/v%) composition caused the most severe case of corrosion over a period of seven days. It was also observed that the corrosion in cast iron obeyed the relati… Show more

“…However, the main factors in the aqueous iron corrosion in natural waters are the protectiveness of films of corrosion products and the rate of oxidant (e.g. O 2 , H + ) diffusion across the film [27,30,[45][46][47][48].…”

“…These salts can severely affect cast iron. The salts such as carbonates and sulphides chemical reaction to form alkaline solutions, and thus the rate of corrosion is less in cast iron with the presence of such salts in comparison to chlorides and mercuric salts which chemically react to form acidic solution [11]. However, the fibre composites are corrosion and chemical resistant and therefore have almost negligible corrosion over time if used as an alternate material for cast iron increase the life of the aqua silencer [12].…”
