Chemical Diversity of Citrus Leaf Essential Oils

Abstract: The essential oils from leaves of 20 commercial citrus accessions maintained by the University of California, Riverside Givaudan Citrus Variety Collection and selected on the basis of their odor profile were analyzed by GCMS/FID. The main components were quantified while the semi-quantitative percentage composition data was compiled with data from other publications for sample visualization, classification and comparison with leaf oils from other citrus accessions. Some compositional clusters aligned closely w… Show more

“…By joining the fields of chemistry and information technology for solving chemical problems related to storage, indexing, and searching of chemical information, a tool was created to solve complex problems in drug discovery [ 1 ]. While chem- and bioinformatics are key to drug discovery workflows, cheminformatics is an important tool in disciplines beyond drug discovery, such as materials science [ 2 ], metabolomics [ 3 ], and odor research [ 4 ]. “…In the Citrus genus, the species of greatest economic importance are: Citrus sinensis L. Citrus essential oil is a complex mixture of secondary metabolites and their content as well as composition depends on factors, such as: species, variety and cultivar, cultivation, extraction and separation methods. Its volatile constituents are a mixture of monoterpene (such as limonene) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives, including aldehydes, ketones, acids, alcohols and esters (Clery et al, 2022). On this frame, of interest are plant essential oils from citrus.…”
