Chemical foaming extrusion of poly(lactic acid) with chain-extenders: Physical and morphological characterizations

Abstract: The effects of an epoxide-based chain-extender (CE) on the properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foams obtained by chemical foaming extrusion using 4 wt.% of chemical foaming agent (CFA) were studied. PLA/CE blends with different weight ratios of CE were initially processed using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. PLA/CE foams were then produced using a single-screw extruder. Various PLA/CE foams characterizations, including solution viscosity, thermal properties (DSC, TGA), cellular structure (void fraction, … Show more

“…This is mainly due to PLA's low melt strength. The recent research to overcome this drawback to facility PLA foaming process includes introducing chain extender 14,15 for branching structure, changing the L/D ratio conguration, 16 varying PLA's molecular weight, 17 compounding with different types of additives, 18,19 blending with other polymers having a higher crystallization rate, 20 and controlling the gas contents. 21 For example, PLA foam morphology can be greatly controlled by adding second component into the PLA matrix, which leads to increasing of cell density because of the promoted cell nuclei.…”

“…In addition, the PLA foams with ENR exhibit low T cc values in second heating DSC scans as compared with the neat PLA foams. This result may be due to the fast nucleation process induced by ENR [24][25][26] .…”

“…However, it is still a challenge to prepare PLA/wood flour composite foams because of the low melt strength of PLA matrix. The melt strength of PLA can be improved by increasing the molecular weight and modifying the linear molecular structure of PLA through in situ ultraviolet-induced chain branching [ 41 ] and the incorporation of the chain extender [ 2 , 20 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. In contrast, chain extender is more efficacious, and low chain extender content is needed for chain branching.…”
