Chemical Fractionation and Risk Assessment of Some Heavy Metals in Soils, Assiut Governorate, Egypt

Abstract: Toxic elements behavior in Egyptian soil need more studies for the enhancement of soil quality and human health protection. The current study focuses on the mobility assessment of chemical species of As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu and Co in soils due to anthropogenic emission using sequential extraction (SE) and risk assessment code (RAC). Generally, the studied soils are alkaline calcareous loam soil. It has a low organic matter (OM) that ranges from 1 to 3.8% and is enriched with As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu and Co, which prefere… Show more

“…Different elements are well-categorized by their physicochemical forms in soils, especially in organic complexes, adsorbed in solid phases or constituents of solid/mineral phases, with diverse solubility (Wu et al, 2019;Salman et al, 2021). Plantaccessible forms represent the exchangeable complexes (organic and inorganic components) and soluble forms in soil solution taken predominantly by plants as divalent ions.…”

“…As, it was found high concentrations of these elements in Egyptian phosphate ores (Abou El-Anwar et al 2019b). Pollution indices were applied widely to study the enrichment of elements in soil and sediment to discriminate element source and adverse environmental impact (Abou El-Anwar et al 2021;Elnazer and Salman 2021;Mostafa et al 2023). The current study aims to investigate the occurrence of REEs in Agricultural soil in Assiut Governorate, discriminate their spatial distribution, source and enrichment degree.…”

“…These indicators are primarily aimed at assessing the anthropogenic impact on soil quality and can reveal the potential impacts of trace elements on soil ecology, including the possibility of contamination (Wieczorek et al 2018;Kowalska et al 2018;Mekky et al 2019;Ciarkowska and Gambus 2020;Klimkowicz-Pawlas and Debeane 2020;Fazekašová and Fazekaš 2020). For several years, ecotoxicological tests have also been used in soil quality assessments (Baran et al 2014; Baran and Wieczorek 2015;Alves and Cardoso 2016;El-Alam et al 2018;Abou El-Anwar et al 2021;Salman et al 2021). All the above methods play an important role in monitoring soil quality to ensure the sustainability of agroecosystems.…”

“…Elements are released into the soil environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Some of these elements are macro-or micronutrients used by plants; therefore, land use, as well as the system and type of cultivation, affects their content in the soil (Lal 2015;Kopittke et al 2019;Salman et al 2021). Deforestation is a common feature of the onset of agricultural development in monsoon climates (Ramakrishnan 1992;Lal 2000).…”
