Chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3-MPTS)

Abstract: Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized by oxidation with potassium permanganate using a phase transfer catalyst. The functionalized nanotubes (f-CNTs) were allowed to react with a functional chemical such as 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3-MPTS). The f-CNTs and the reaction product of f-CNTs and 3-MPTS (fs-CNTs) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and energy dispersion spectroscopy and also by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The… Show more

“…An increased absorption at 1223 cm À1 for the oxygen plasma treated samples is tentatively assigned to the CAO stretching modes of hydroxyl or ether functional groups [33,34], while the congested feature at 1734 cm À1 is typical for the C@O stretching mode [33]. In addition the absorption band at 1380 cm À1 might be attributed to the OAH bending deformation mode in carboxyl groups [35]. The absorption around 1633 cm À1 is assigned to the bending vibrational mode of water, which is possibly adsorbed on the MWCNT surface [36].…”

“…Furthermore, the broad band on the range of 3100~3500 cm -1 is originated from the stretching of -OH in the acids [12]. The peak at 1580 cm -1 is ascribed to the C=C stretching vibration of intrinsic SWNTs [11]. The sharp peak found at 1105 cm -1 is attributed to Si-O-Si vibration of the Si/SiO 2 substrate used [12].…”
