Chemical grafting of curcumin at polyethylene terephthalate woven fabric surface using a prior surface activation with ultraviolet excimer lamp

Abstract: Durable curcumin-treated antibacterial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics (against Staphylococcus aureus) were produced by dyeing with curcumin after surface activation using vacuum ultraviolet excimer lamp at 172 nm. Surface change properties of the exposed fabrics were characterized by surface analysis methods such as wettability, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results show an increase in surface hydrophilicity with a water contact angle of the PET fabric reaching 24 aft… Show more

“…Irradiation seems to increase the wicking height of the PET fabric considerably to about 60% after an exposure of 15 min to lamp. Improvement in capillary uptake after excimer treatment has also been reported by Kerkeni, Gupta, Perwuelz, and Behary (2010). From the above results, it could be seen that exposure of 15 min brings about maximum effect on the surface of fabric, thus this exposure time was used for all subsequent studies.…”

“…Fabric samples can be exposed to the UV lamp radiation through a sample holder. Details of the apparatus are described in a previous paper [17]. The PET samples were treated under different exposure times (1 and 10 min) and on both sides of the PET fabric.…”

“…The effect of excimer irradiation on the dyeing of PET fabric with curcumin at 90 °C, and on the antibacterial properties of PET fabrics, has already been studied in a previous paper [17]. The aim of this paper is to compare the two ecotechnologies (air atmospheric plasma and UV excimer) in terms of their impact on the surface properties of PET, as well as on the curcumin dye uptake of a PET fabric at two different dyeing temperatures of 90 and 130 °C, and to compare the results with dyeing without surface activation.…”

“…Des recherches menées au GEMTEX ont montré qu'une pré-activation de surface des fibres de PET par la technique d'excimère ultra-violets, suivie d'une fonctionnalisation en masse par la technique de diffusion, permet de fixer les molécules de curcumine dans la fibre du polyester, et à la surface fibreuse, par la technique de chimie-sorption. Cette méthodologie permet de conférer des propriétés antibactériennes qui persistent lors des lavages [15] (Figure 4). La nisine est une molécule antibactérienne.…”
