Chemical Impurities: An Epistemological Riddle with Serious Side Effects

Abstract: Chemical synthesis is a science and an art. Rooted in laboratory or large-scale manufacture, it results in certain side products, eventually compromising the integrity of the final products. Such “impurities” occur in small amounts and, within chemistry itself, are of little concern. In pharmacy, in contrast, impurities increase the potential for toxicity, side effects, and serious implications for human health and the environment. The pharmaceutical regulatory agencies have therefore developed regulatory and … Show more

“…In recent years, requirements for the quality, purity, and environmental friendliness of produced substances have been constantly increasing [ 1 ]. Therefore, the development of novel energy-efficient and eco-friendly synthesis and separation methods for various compounds, as well as purification technologies, are becoming urgently needed [ 2 , 3 , 4 ].…”

“…A total of 33% of the evaluated studies had incomplete source information on type, origin, specifications of size, and shape of the microplastics. The chemical purity criteria were of utmost importance as chemical composition affects the assessment of microplastics characterisation and impurities were a source of contamination that may cause unfavourable chemical reactions (Abdin et al, 2020). The average scores for chemical purity were higher for the current study as compared to Ruijter et al (2020).…”

“…However, the concentrations of solvents were not reported, and thus making it difficult to be experimented further. Chemicals of high grade are known to be the purest of chemicals and contain the least number of impurities (Abdin et al, 2020). The grades of chemicals decrease as the level of impurities increase.…”

“…This is necessary because the degradation of pharmaceutical products has the potential to cause serious harm to patients, thus making it imperative to identify, characterize, and understand potential degradation products to ensure the safety of pharmaceutical products. 133 As a result, regulatory bodies mandate the testing of pharmaceutical substances for potential degradation under various conditions, . Furthermore, the availability of isolated impurities as reference standards is important for the exclusion of possible contamination in pharmaceutical products as part of the quality control process.…”
