Chemical, physico-mechanical properties and biological durability of rubberwood particleboards after post heat-treatment in palm oil

Abstract: The chemical properties, dimensional stability, mechanical strength and termite resistance of urea formaldehyde (UF) bond rubberwood (RW) particleboard (PB) were assessed after a two-step oil heat treatment (OHT). The PB was immersed in palm oil before heating to 180, 200, and 220°C in a laboratory oven for 2 h. Anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) and water repellency efficiency (WRE) as well as bending (MOE, MOR) and internal bonding strength (IB) were determined. Resistance against a subterranean termite,Coptoter… Show more

“…Hysteresis has a special role in drying and steaming wood as well as explaining the internal tensions. Water repellency can be improved by coating with natural wax [62], paraffin wax [63], palm oil [64], and esterified organosolv lignin [65].…”

“…The principle reason for the changes in wood properties is the alternations in wood chemistry as a result of exposure to high temperature [11]. Reduction in equilibrium moisture content (EMC) is the main observation in the heat treated wood as a result of thermal treatment and has been intensively studied and reported by several researchers [12][13][14][15][16]. Apart from that, improvement in decay resistance against biodeterioration agents such as fungi and termites is also one of the most prominent properties of heat treated wood [14][15][16].…”

“…The particleboard provides the advantages of using lower quality raw materials and adequate mechanical properties and surface finish (Mendes et al, 2018;Narciso et al, 2020), but the dimensional instability due its hygroscopic behavior is one of the shortcomings (Salca & Hiziroglu, 2014;Majka et al, 2016). Many studies have been carried out using different modification processes to decrease such disadvantage (Lee et al, 2017;Özgenç et al, 2017). Heat treatment is reported to be an effective method since it significantly improves the hydrophobic properties and dimensional stability of wood and wood products (Poncsák et al, 2007;Tarmian & Mastouri, 2019;Soratto et al, 2020).…”
