Chemical speciation and toxicity of metals assessed by three bioluminescence‐based assays using marine organisms

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Metal toxicity is a function of the biology of the target organism and the chemical speciation of the metal. The toxicity of 11 metals was assessed with three cell-based bioassays based on marine organisms: the bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum of the Microtoxா bioassay, an environmental strain of P. phosphoreum, and photocytes isolated from the brittlestar Ophiopsila californica. Metal speciation was calculated for three commonly used media: NaCl-based Microtoxா bioassay medium, artificial seawate… Show more

“…For example, growth of D. radiodurans was inhibited at 1.8 mM Cd(II) and 2.5 mM U(VI); while growth of P. putida was inhibited at metal concentrations ranging from 50 mM Ni(II) to 1.7 mM U(VI) to 240 mM Fe(III). Similarly high concentrations of U caused growth inhibition in similar earlier liquid culture studies [102,103].…”

“…Deheyn et al [24] assessed 11 metals with three cell-based bioassays based on marine organisms: the bacterium Photobacterium Phosphoreum of the Microtox bioassay, an environmental strain of P. Phosphoreum, and photocytes isolated from Brittlestar Ophiopsila Californica. In all three assays, the elements Cd and Hg exhibited similar speciation, as well as similar toxicity profiles.…”

“…Copyright Elemental sulfur inhibited bacterial luminescence and increased respiration of Vibrio fischeri at 2.2 ppm by reversibly modifying luciferase at sites sensitive to redox agents and by affecting electron transport processes (Cetkausakaite et al, 2004). The Microtox bioassay, an environmental strain of Photobacterium phosphoreum, and photocytes from the brittlestar were used to compare metal toxicity (Deheyn et al, 2004). Hyporheic microbial communities were found to be more sensitive indicators of heavy metal contaminants in streams than aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in a 7 day exposure study (Feris et al, 2004).…”
