“…Indeed, several experiments testing the elution characteristics of radioactive Cs in Fukushima natural soils demonstrate that most of the trace amount of Cs cannot be changed into a soluble form. 14) Thus, the roles of the type I and II sites are of great importance for the volume reduction of waste materials left over from decontamination processes. In this paper, we concentrate on the type I and II sites in mica.…”

“…We analyzed the radioactive Cs levels in three different soils collected in Iitate-mura in Fukushima Prefecture [14]. The results showed that more than 65% of the 137 Cs resided in the soil samples after treatment with a 1 mole L −1 NH 4 Cl solution and a 1 mole L −1 CH 3 COOH solution, indicating that more than 60% of radioactive Cs was tightly associated with the soils.…”

“…Cesium at a low concentration is strongly sorbed on micalike minerals of sediments [11][12][13]. Kozai et al have examined the Cs fallout on soils collected in Fukushima, Japan, and they found that not only mica-like minerals, but also minerals other than mica-like minerals (nonmica minerals) probably fixed the deposited radioactive Cs in the soil [14].…”

“…The radioactive Cs was deposited throughout an area to the northwest of FDNPP [First airborne monitoring by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), 2011; Yoshida and Takahashi, 2012]. Many reports have documented characteristics of the deposited radioactive Cs in soils and river sediments (Ito et al 2012;Kozai et al, 2012;Matsunaga et al, 2013;Qin et al, 2012;Tanaka et al, 2012). Ito et al (2012) examined the distribution of radioactive Cs in some types of soils obtained in Iitate -mura, that is located in northwest from FDNPP and which was affected severely by the FD-NPP accident.…”
