Bendz et al (1967) showed nephromin to be a mixture of anthraquinones, which included emodin, and established the formulae for five of these by mass spectrometry: emodin (3-methyl-l,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone), fragilin (7-chloro-l,8dihydroxy-6-O-methyl-3-methylanthraquinone), 7-chloroemodin, 7-chloro-1-O-methylemodin and 7-chloro-l,6-di-O-methylemodin. Further analytical data for these pigments is given by Bohman (1969) who also isolated a triterpene thought to be nephrin (see below) and an additional fatty acid from N. laevigatum.…”
