Besides portability, a miniature mass spectrometer is also expected to be operated by rudimentarily trained or even untrained personnel, especially for in situ analyses. Miniaturized gas chromatography (GC) mass spectrometers have been commercialized and applied for the analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in air or water.
