ChemInform Abstract: Charging of a Redox Catalyst for O2 Evolution.

Abstract

ChemInform Abstract In the Ce4+ oxidation of water using the Ru compound (II) as redox catalyst, an initial rapid drop in the Ce4+ concentration is observed which is found to be not associated with the water oxidation reaction. This initial Ce4+ reduction step is explained by a charging process of the redox catalyst according to the redox reaction outlined in the scheme. The kinetic study of the initial reduction step shows that the rate of Ce4+ reduction is first order with respect to both redox catalyst and Ce4+ concentration, but independent of Ce3+ concentration. The estimated activation energy compares favorably with that for a diffusion-controlled mechanism.
