ChemInform Abstract: Furan Ring Opening — Pyridine Ring Closure: New Route to Quinolines under the Bischler—Napieralski Reaction Conditions.

Abstract: A principally new method for the synthesis of polyfunctional title compounds is developed by recyclization of 2-[2-(acylamino)benzyl]furans in the presence of POCl3. If the substrate bears a second furan moiety, by-processes reduce the yield [cf. (Vc)] or prevent quinoline formation [cf. (VII)]. If the methylene group is substituted by an aryl ring [cf.(VIII)], the desired product is obtained, although this time as (Z) isomer. -(BUTIN*, A. V.; TSIUNCHIK, F. A.; KOSTYUKOVA, O.
